Fall has arrived in the Northeast and so have the cooler air temperatures. Many homeowners in Westchester and Putnam Counties will soon be preparing to batten down for the upcoming winter. One way you can do this is by getting the outside of your home ready for the ice and snow. Therefore, if you’re a homeowner with an old cracked driveway, you should really consider having it repaved. If you live in Mahopac, Brewster, Bedford, North Salem, Yorktown Heights, Mt. Kisco, Chappaqua, or Cortlandt Manor, Northern Construction will gladly assist you with your next Fall driveway paving project.
It’s Not Too Late To Have Your Driveway Paved
The Northern Construction Team is working hard 8 months a year paving driveways. The best times of the year to pave are late Spring and early Fall when the air temperatures are cooler. Air temperatures between 50-60 degrees are perfect for laying down asphalt. If you missed the opportunity to pave your driveway in the Summer, it’s not too late to still get it done. It’s essential to ensure your driveway is in the right condition before winter. Nonetheless, this is the best preventative step to avoid any damage from frost, ice, and snow.
Asphalt Heaving
Heaving is one of the most common issues with older driveways and it occurs when water gets trapped under asphalt and freezes. The ice expands and causes the asphalt to move which can cause cracks to form. The repeated cycle of thawing and freezing can cause extensive damage over time, so repairs will be very expensive. It’s important to remember that cracked asphalt will make it more difficult to plow, shovel, and salt your driveway. Minor cracks can be filled with crack filler, however this will only temporarily slow down additional heaving.
Clearing Debris
Falling leaves can clog catch basins and trench drains if present in your driveway. This will prevent water runoff and snowmelt from properly draining and can lead to clogged pipes. Removing all the leaf litter will also make plowing and cleaning snow easier without any mess. Frozen leaves on the asphalt can also become slippery and become hazardous. Cleaning the driveway is essential to keeping it maintained before ice and snowy conditions arrive.
